How to Cut Down on Your Food Bill
There are many areas that we all spend money in and food is one of them. We all need to eat and drink but the cost of the food that we buy will vary depending on the types of things that we buy and where we shop. Sometimes, if we are struggling financially and perhaps having to borrow then cutting back in this area could be really handy. There are some ways that we might be able to easily reduce the amount of money that we are spending though and they could significantly reduce your food bill.
Limit how often you eat out
Eating out can be a great treat, but many of us do it quite often. The cost of it will be a lot higher than cooking the food for ourselves which may lead to us taking out loans. It can be a good way to get food that you would not normally cook, but it is an expense that you may need to cut down on. The more often you eat out; the less of a treat it will seem and so it could be better to leave it for a treat rather than making it a more frequent thing.
Cut down on take out food
Take away food is so convenient and it is cheaper than eating out and so it can be easy to justify doing it. However, it is much more expensive than making the food for yourself. Many of us also have more take away food than we realise. Buying a coffee from a coffee shop, a bag of crisps or pasty from a shop and a sandwich at lunchtime are as much take away food as buying a pizza in the evening. All of these foods will be more expensive than cooking food for yourself and it is likely that you will be able to make something much healthier as well. It can be easy to have a lot of take away food without even realising how much it is costing you. If you grab a coffee and pastry in the morning, a chocolate bar from the vending machine mid-morning, a sandwich and tea at lunchtime, coffee and crisps in the afternoon and have a drive through on the way home, you could be having take out for every meal. Most people would not have this much, but those small bits and pieces add up.
Be careful with reductions
Often in supermarkets there are reduced products and these can be tempting for us. We can easily be persuaded to buy them because they are cheaper. However, these items are often things that we do not really need. Things like snack foods, for example, which we could easily do without entirely. So, be really careful when you are shopping as you could find that you will easily be tempted to buy things which you could easily not buy at all. Remember that if you save money by buying an item you were not going to buy at all and you eat it on top of your normal food; you have actually spent more money not less. If you buy something that is reduced as a replacement for something more expensive, then this will be a saving and it is worth doing. Often though, we find that the reduced items are not things we normally buy or we buy them as well as our normal shopping and just end up eating extra.
Find a cheaper supermarket
Supermarkets tend to sit within a certain price range. So, there are so that are budget supermarkets, some that are premium ones and others that fall in the middle. It can be easy to make assumptions from this about which will be the cheapest for you. However, you may be surprised at which will actually be the cheapest for you. Some items will be cheaper in the supermarkets that are known for being more expensive while others will be dearer. It is therefore wise to compare the prices on the items that you buy rather than just looking at a place in general. There is a website where you are able to do this, you can shop for a typical basket of food and it will compare the cost of what you are buying across all major supermarkets and you will be able to calculate which will be the cheapest.
Cut down on unnecessary food
Many of us will eat more food than necessary. This can not only be an issue for our finances but also for our health. It is therefore a good idea to think about what we are eating and whether we are eating too much. If we can cut back in some areas then this could help. Perhaps things like puddings, snacks, alcohol and fizzy drinks, large portions and things like this. It can also help to have a healthier diet, so having less meat and more vegetables, changing unhealthy and expensive cereals for porridge and cutting down on sugary foods and fatty foods.
